            The youth and the star

For a star a youth had lost his heart.

So he would stand still on the seashore

Looking at her, dreaming of her and admiring.

To her were turned his deepest thoughts.

        Il giovane e la stella

Un giovane era innamorato

di una stella.

In riva la mare si soffermava

a guardarla, la sognava, la mirava,

le rivolgeva i suoi

più profondi pensieri.

He knew or more or less believed

The star was a somatic being,

So different from the man

Incapable of understanding

And hence incapable of love.

Ma sapeva, o perlomeno credeva,

che la stella era un'entità

fisica, distinta dall'uomo incapace

d'intendere e di volere, quindi d'amare.

He thought his destiny should be to love.

But left without any hope for mutuality

That solid stone devoted to the star

A poem composed of sacrifice and pain.

Considerava il suo destino amare,

senza speranza d'essere ricambiato,

quel solido pezzo di pietra,

e su di lei costruì un poema  

fatto di rinunce e sofferenze.

One night he got upon a highest rock

Burning with love, wishing to watch the star,

Yearning to embrace her

He hurled himself into the dark.

Una volta, trovandosi di notte

su un alto scoglio, guardando

la stella arse d'amore

e, preso dal desiderio di abbracciarla,

si gettò nel vuoto per andarle

incontro.

But at the instant of the jump

A thought sprang to his mind:

“How can I do a thing like that?”-

He wondered.

 Nel momento del balzo, però,

un pensiero gli sfiorò la mente:

-Ma è possibile ciò che sto facendo?-

si chiese.

At saying these words

He crashed onto the ground,

Since he was incapable of love.

 Had he been firmly sure of his own feelings

Right at the point of the jump,

He would have easily reached the star.

 For love should not implore, nor require

 Così dicendo cadde brutalmente

sfracellandosi sulla sabbia.

 Non sapeva amare.

Se nel momento del balzo

fosse stato fermamente convinto

sarebbe volato in un salto a congiungersi

con la stella.

Love should be strong enough

To ripen into certitude:

Since it’s the only way for love

Not to be dragged along,

But be your greatest force.

 L'amore non deve implorare né

pretendere.

L'amore deve avere la forza di

diventare certezza:

solo così non è trascinato

ma trascina.
